Miss Oklahoma, Makenna Smith, is the ambassador for seat belt usage and has a personal interest in the topic. When she was 19, an accident that she was involved in took away her father’s ability to do Tae Kwan Do. All because he took off his seatbelt in order to get comfortable, so he could take a nap. She was the driver and did have her seatbelt on during the crash. The driver of the other car involved in the crash died as a result of her injuries. She was not wearing her seatbelt.

Since being named Miss Oklahoma, Smith has turned the issue of seat belt usage into her platform. She speaks to school age children, civic groups, just about anyone she can about the importance of seat belt usage. Therefore, the partnership of the crown and law enforcement in order to promote seat belt usage is a great one. A group of law enforcement officers from around the state gathered at the state capitol for a photo shoot with Miss Oklahoma for posters and flyers that will promote the partnership.
